Wood Property Variation in Third Generation (F-3) of Progeny Trial ofAcacia mangium in South Sumatra, Indonesia
ABSTRACT
Third generation (F-3) of progeny trail of Acacia mangium was established in Subanjiriji, South Sumatra on March 2007. The evaluation of the trial for tree selection within family were carried out using growth characteristic, whereas the wood property traits were not included. The last evaluation of the trial for family selection will use wood property traits to improve wood quality. The investigation of wood property of`A. mangium in progeny trial in 3 years old will be used for family selection for wood quality improvement. The Results of investigation show that mean of wood basic density was 0.44 g/cm3 and distribution of wood basic density of family mean in the trial was high range (0.40 to 0.51 g/cm3). Variation of wood basic density and moisture content were significant difference among family. Negative strong correlation between wood basic density and pilodyn penetration dept was found. The results of investigation indicate that trees selection using wood properties should be conducted to improve wood quality in the progeny trial.
