An Improved Anther Method to Increase Seed Production of Acacia mangium x Acacia auriculiformis Hybrid in The Hybridization Orchard
ABSTRACT
Pod production and hybrid seed yield were assessed in a hybridization orchard of Acacia mangium x Acacia auriculiformis. The hybridization orchard was established in 2006 using 11 selected plus trees from the first-generation of progeny test of A. mangium and 12 selected plus trees from the first- generation of progeny test of A. auriculiformis. Crosses were conducted using 2 spikes for each cross using improved anther method without emasculation with application time. Based on synchronisation in flowering time, 17 crossing combinations were made resulting in 89 hybrid families. The average number of pods and seeds in the improved anther method were 4.4 pods/spike and 5.3 sound seeds/pod respectively, while those in the ordinary anther method were 2.79 pods/spike and 2.78 soundseeds/pod respectively. Verification using SCAR marker indicated that almost all of the collected seeds were hybrid seeds. This finding showed that improved anther method without emasculation was effective in increasing seed production of A. mangium x A. auriculiformis hybrid.
