Improvement Technique of Traditional Lac Culture in East Sumba, EastNusa Tenggara
ABSTRACT
As a minor national non timber forest product, lac contributes a significant income both for farmer and local government in East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. The research studied the application of intensive lac culture technique with ash and fogging application adopted and modified by PT Perhutani lac culture procedures to prevent harvesting failure caused by parasites and predators attack. To improve the quality of product, 5 level of NaOH (0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8% and
1%) and 2 proportion level of water and raw lac material (1:2 and 1:4) were used to produce high yield proportion of first quality seed lac based on Indonesian National Standard (SNI). Stick lac production increase from 176 g in traditional technique to 281 g with ash application and 531 grams with ash and fogging application. Application of 0.4% NaOH in 1:4 composition of lac and water produced the highest output proportion (73.5%) and classified into first quality seedlac.
