Phytochemical and Antibacterial Properties of Gewang (CoryphautanLamk.) Fruits and Roots
ABSTRACT
Gewang trees are found and widespread in East Nusa Tenggara province-Indonesia. Almost all parts of this tree can be utilized by local communities. Its fruits and roots are used as traditional medicine. This study aims to determine the chemicals content and to test the antibacterial properties of Gewang fruits and roots. Fruits and roots extraction was performed by maceration and soxhlet methods and using methanol for chemicals analysis in GCMS instrument. Tests were performed by Davis Stout method of antibacterial properties barrier region in E.coli and S.typhii. The results showed that the main chemical components of Gewang fruit are carbohydrate. Gewang fruit also contains an ester compound as odor-forming compounds and aroma that is typical of a Gewang. Unlike the fruit, the roots of Gewang contain of phenol compounds. Antibacterial test showed a stronger root methanol extracts inhibit the activity of bacteria than the fruit extract. In accordance with the provisions of Davis Stout, methanol extract of Gewang root classified has strong antibacterial properties of being able to inhibit the growth of E.coli on 10.3mm and S.typhii on 11.6mm, while the methanol extract of the fruit is capable of preventing E.coli growth on 9.2 mm and S.typhiion 8.2 mm so that the entry in the category has moderate properties inhibit bacteria. Fruit and root of Gewang are great potential for medicine and food preservatives.
