Kajian total populasi dan struktur sosial Bekantan (Nasalis larvatus Wurmb.) di Taman Nasiional Kutai, Kalimantan Timur
Research was conducted at the Kutai National Park, aimed to study the population and social structure of the proboscis monkey groups and the impact of the habitat destruction to the population and distribution of the monkeys. The research area were divided into three habitats i.e. uper riverine forest of Sangata River, down stream of Sangata River and mangrove riverine forest of Sangkimah River. The two of former areas were located at the border of the park, while the later area was within the park area. The population abundance of proboscis monkeys in Kutai Naaational Park varied between 0.8 - 8.9 individual/km. The populations of proboscis monkeys spreaded out into some sub populations and distributed between 18 - 40 km for each population. In the upper stream of Sangata river the average number was 12 individual per group, in the down stream of Sangata river was 14.4 individual and in the mangrove riverine forest of Sangkimah river was 21 individual. Mossst of the proboscis habitat quality decreased as a result of uncontrolled utilization of the riverine forest areas and mangrove forest, intended for fish ponds development in the riverine mangrove, traditional gardens and local settlements. The proboscis habitat cinditions are very dependent on the dominant human intervere, causing adecrease of the proboscis populations, which finally the population would become into threshold populaaationcategory, after five years.
