Penyiapan lahan tanpa bakar dan tanpa olah tanah untuk tanaman Sengon buto (Enterolobium cyclocarpum Griseb.)
Site preparation for forest plantation development with slash and burn system has been prohibited since 1955. The alternative of slash and burn system that economically and environmentally sound must be invented. The objective of the research was to investigate the optimum of size preparation without burning, cultivation method and planting materials for the growth of sengon buto (Enterolobium cyclocarpum Griseb.) plants in the bushes-dominated area. A factorial experiment within randomized complete block design was applied in this experiment with three factors, each factor consisted of two treatments namely : land clearing (total and clearing and total land clearing with mulching), culvating (minimum cultivation and no cultivation), and planting materials (Seed and seedling). Each treatment combination consisted of 20 plants and was replicated four times. The results showed that land clearing and cultivating treatments did not significantly affect sengon buto's growth and survival (p 0.05), whereas planting material affected its growth and survival (p 0.01). The suitable planting material for sengon buto industrial plantation forest was two-month-old seedlings, whereas sound seeds of sengon buto can be used as a planting material for regreening bare land. Total land clearing, without burning and cultivation system can be applied for sengon buto plantation development. This system was cheaper than that of land cleaaring without burning with minimum cultivation system.
