Pengaruh pengeringan dan penyimpanan terhadap perubahan fisiologi dan biokimia benih Acacia mangium
Naturally, seed proceeds chronological ageing process following times. Seed ageing is a decrease of physiological seed quality that cause broad changes of seed either physically, physiologically or biochemically. Thus, it brings about the decrease of seed viability. The aim of the study was to determine the changes of Mangium (Acacia mangium) seeds physiologically and biochemically during storage and desiccating so that the quality of seed would be assessed. There were two trials in this study: 1) decreasing seed moisture content by desiccation for 0, 24, 36, 48, and 96 hours and 2) storing the seeds conventionally in 3 different conditions of storage (ambient room, air-conditioned room and refrigerator) and storing the seeds rapidly by ageing method for 1, 2 and 3 days in a germination chamber of 43 derajat Celciuos & 100 percent RH. Completely randomized design was used with one factor for the first trial and two factors for the second trial. The result showed that seed moisture content of mangium was relatively constant during desiccatting for 0 to 96 hours. The germination percentage of the seeds decreased following pariods of desiccation. The content of fat and protein in mangium seed increased, meanwhile the content of starch decreased during desiccating. Storage for 6 months in ambient room resulted 77 percent of germination. The germination percentage of the seed using 3 days ageing method was up to 60 percent, similar to the seeds stored conventionally for 6 months.
