Hubungan umur pohon dengan parameter pertumbuhan, potensi produksi dan mutu benih Gmelina arborea

This experiment is aimed at assessing the possible relation between age of gmelina arborea trees and their growth parameter, and between such age and characteristics of their seeds (i.e. the potential production and qualities). It was conducted on G. arborea tree stands situated in PT ITCI's area, East Kalimantan. The tree at each of their particular age (i.e. 7-, 9-, 11-, 13-, 15-, and 17- years) were selected randomly. The number of selected trees in total reached 60 trees. Meanwhile the criteria for assessing the production and quality of the seed were weight of 1000 seeds, germination capacity, seed purity and their moisture content. The tree ages were regarded as factors, and its possible relation with such growth parameter and criteria was assessed by completely randomized design and fillowed with regression analysis. The results revealed that tree age was significantly related with growth parameters (i.e. tree diameter and height), seed production and seed qualities (moisture content, weight of 1000 seeds, purity and germination capacity). As such, the increase in tree age tended to lower seed production for G. arborea. The same tendency occurred to moisture content, but did not apply to weight of 1000 seeds and seed purity. Further, although the germination capacity of seeds significantly changed with tree age, such changes/ difference were too little and more over the germination capacity mostly above 71 percent.
