Produksi daun beberapa jenis murbei (Morus spp.)
Mulberry leaf is the only source of food for the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. The growth and development of the larva and subsequent cocoon production depend on the production and quality of mulberry leaves. A study on the leaf production of several mulberry species (Morus spp) was carried out from December 1996 to December 1998 in Dramaga Sericulture Research Station. The objective of this study was to find out the most suitable mulberry species for West Java which has high leaf production and is more tolerant on dry season. Six mulberry species were used for this study, namely Morus alba var. Kanva-2, M. indica var. S54 , M. indica var. DRS 29, BNK, M. multicaulis var Kokuso and M. cathayana. A randomized block design with six treatments (species) in four replications was applied in this study. This study concluded that the leaf nutritional composition and production of mulberry species differ significantly. M. alba var. Kanva-2 and M. multicaulis var. Kokuso, which contained higher nutrition and produced more weight, could be used for feeding silkworm larvae to get higher cocoon production. Futhermore, those species were also more suitable to grow in the research area and more resistant to dry season.
