Kajian sosial ekonomi dan budaya masyarakat dalam hubungannya dengan kebakaran hutan di Jambi
Many people argued that activities of local community living surrounding forest area are considered to be one of several causes of forest fire in Indonesia. In many cases however, lots of evidences prove that traditional knowledge, innovation and practices developed by local people inherited from generation to generation are capable to conserve biodiversity including several efforts to eliminate forest fire. The research aims to study some strategies established by the people to maintain forest sustainability including the anticipation of forest fire in the most prone areas of Jambi Province. The research was done by using survey method and took case studies from three villages as the focus of attention i.e. Pematang Raman, Petanang and Betung villages in the area of HPH PT. Putra Duta Indah Wood. Interview method was used to collect primary data from respondents selected purposively. The results showed that people in the research area already developed several strategies and efforts based on their indigenous knowledge to anticipate forest fire. Forest fire has directly affected the life of local people especially in Pematang Raman and Betung villages since social-cultural and economic condition of the people strongly depend on forest. Whereas people in Petanang village who are mostly transmigrants with farming activity is their main source of income, would not be influenced much by forest fire since their interaction with forest is relatively minimum. Therefore, several endeavors to minimize forest fire by involving local people should be developed. Eventually, integrated forest fire control by adopting and modifying indigenous local knowledge to increase active participation of local people is expected to be able to reduce forest fire.
