Peranan karbon dalam peningkatan nilai ekonomi hutan tanaman Acacia mangium di Sumatera Selatan
Role of forest to reduce carbon emission has yet to be properly quantified. Carbon trade through Kyoto protocol need to be responded immediately. This paper aims to calculate carbon content in mangium estate in Subanjeriji and Gemawang, South Sumatera. The underlying motivation is to contribute to suistainable timber estate development and provide baseline condition of carbon content in mangium plantation. Using Brown (1977) and Vademicum Kehutanan (1976) models. It is estimated that carbon content in one cycle of mangium life (8 years) was about Rp 29.700 and Rp 27.500 calculated based on mechanic and manual land preparation technique. Were the carbon price added to project feasibility, the IRR would increased about 5 to 8persen, while NPV would increased about 20 to 50persen. The implication is, inspite of unfavourable investment in current situations (high social risk and hih invensment costs), timber estate establishment need to proceed because of its potential benefits. Also, the use of manual land preparation is recommended because of high employment generation and lower cost of carbon produced meaning competitive carbon price.
