Penyiapan lahan dan ukuran bibit yang sesuai untuk penanaman mahoni afrika (Khaya anthotheca C.CD) di areal semak belukar
The mainstay tree species in the long term will be capable of competing with Acacia or Eucalyptus species which has been planted widely. African mahogany (K. anthotheca ) is one of prominent tree species in Central Java necessary to be expanded. The purpose of the experiment is to investigate the suitable seedling size and land preparation without burning for african mahogany species in shrub-bush area of tropical rain climate. A split-plot design was applied with land preparation (control, strip clear and total clear) as a main plot and seedling size (small and medium) as a sub plot. Each treatment combination consists of 20 plants, replicated seven times. Results indicated that african mahogany seedlings of medium size (height and stem diameter of 23 + 2 cm and 2.3 + 0.3 mm) were better in growth and survival than those of small size (height and stem diameter of 17 + 2 cm and 1.8 + 0.3 mm). Land preparation with total clearing for K. anthotheca planting on shrub-bush area of tropical rain climate was more beneficial than those strip clearing or without clearing. It was recommended that african mahogany planted in the field should be cleaned from weed and liana minimum three times in the first year and two times in the second year after planting.
