Pemanfaatan limbah sabut kelapa sawit dan sekam padi sebagai medium pertumbuhan bibit mahoni afrika (Khaya anthotheca C.DC.)
Growing medium is one of the important factors affecting the growth and quality of tree seedlings. There is no single growing medium that can be used for all species. Generally, organic materials as growing media have advantages compare to top-soil. The purpose of the experiment was to prove that organic materials were better than top-soil and to investigate the suitable growing media for the growth and morphological quality of K. anthotheca seedlings. Six types of media namely : pure top-soil, pure oil palm husk, pure oil palm husk compost, top-soil + oil palm husk = 1 : 1 (v/v), top-soil + oil palm husk compost = 1 : 1 (v/v), and oil palm husk compost + rice husk = 1 : 1 (v/v) were arranged in randomized completely block design with 6 replications. Each replication consisted of 10 seedlings. The result showed that the growth and morphological quality of K. anthotheca seedlings were better on organic media than on pure Oxisol top-soil medium. The other beneficial of using organic media was the fertility degradation of the land which was exploited its top-soil was minimized. The medium which could be used for the growth of K. anthotheca seedlings were oil palm husk compost + rice husk = 1 : 1 (v/v), pure oil palm husk compost, pure oil palm husk or top-soil + oil palm husk compost = 1 : 1 (v/v). Those media were more suitable than pure Oxisol top-soil from the aspects of the growth, morfological quality and transportation cost of K. anthotheca seedlings.
