The Influence of Pruning on the Growth of Shorea stenoptera Burck atKHDTK Haurbentes, West Java, Indonesia
ABSTRACT
One of the purposes in forest establishment especially in producing construction wood is large diameter trees with high clear bole. In relation to that purpose an experiment on the influence of pruning on the growth of Shorea stenoptera Burck (Dipterocarpaceae family) was conducted at KHDTK (Kawasan Hutan Dengan Tujuan Khusus, Forest area with Special Purpose) Haurbentes, West Java, Indonesia. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the influence of pruning of Shorea stenoptera Burck branches on the growth of the diameter and height. Shorea stenoptera plantation of 15–35 months old was used in this experiment. Four treatments of green pruning intensities: 0%, 25%, 50% and 75% of total tree height were applied. Measurement of diameter and height were carried out at the age of 15, 22, 28 and 35 months old. The results showed that at 36 months age the diameter of Shorea stenoptera showed the highest of
8.35 cm at 75% intensity treatment while 50% intensity treatment had 8.31 cm. Both treatments
were not significantly difference. For tree height, 0% treatment gave the highest result of 6.01 m. Based on this research result it is recommended to apply 50% brunch pruning to obtain better diameter growth of Shorea stenoptera Burck.
