Characteristics of Households as Drivers for Forest Transition: A Case Study in Baghdevi CFUG, Chitwan District, Nepal and LMDH Galang Taruna, Ciamis District, Indonesia
ABSTRACT
Deforestation constitutes the main problem in developing countries. The magnitude of such deforestation varies. It is said that demographic factor/human population size has negative correlation with area size of forest coverage. Community Forestry (CF) of Nepal has been started since mid-1970s, while Forest Resource Management Together with the Community (PHBM) of Indonesia has just started in early 2001 as means of alleviating poverty surrounding forest areas in return to forest protection and rehabilitation. This study aims at identifying the characteristics of households that engage in Community Forestry (CF) of Nepal and Forest Resource Management Together with the Community (PHBM) which becomes driving factors for the success of reforestation. CF program has been transferring forest areas to management of Community Forest User Group (CFUG) and the members of CFUG have been benefitting forest products for their daily consumption. Meanwhile, Lembaga Masyarakat Desa Hutan (LMDH) members have been protecting main trees at forest areas in return to incentives they will gain at the end of management cycle.
